CHAPTER 40

BRYCE

Lynette and I moved toward the light, winding around some huge pine trees and trying to stay on a path. The farther we went, the more uneasy I felt. I’ve read stories of people getting caught in an avalanche or taking a wrong turn in the snow and getting lost. At best, the people lost toes and fingers to frostbite. At worst, they died.

I remembered the verse in the Bible that talks about Satan disguising himself as an “angel of light,” and that got me even more scared. As we slowly skied into the wilderness, I prayed for wisdom. Some people “say” a prayer, as if all you have to do is mouth the words. I prayed, as in, if we didn’t get help from God we were going to be royally cold as ice cubes before this was over.

Please, God, I prayed, you know everything. You know exactly where we are and what it will take to get us out of this mess. I don’t want a big rescue party coming up here looking for us, but we need your help. Show us the right path, and if this light is not what we should follow, show us that too. I prayed for both of us because I knew Lynette was not the praying type.

“You getting cold?” she called.

“I was cold when I got out here,” I said. “I’m okay, though. You?”

“My face is numb. And I can’t feel my fingertips.”

“Hold up,” I said.

I looked closely at her face. Her nose was red and so were her cheeks. I couldn’t help noticing how dark her eyebrows were, and her eyes were like . . . well, I’ll spare you the details, but believe me, she’s pretty even when she’s freezing. I took off the scarf I was wearing.

She protested. “You don’t have to do that.”

“I know. But you’re a lot colder than I am.”

I put the scarf around her neck, making sure it covered her face but that she could still see. “That better?”

“Yeah.” She looked down. “You think we’re lost?”

“I’m not sure we’re going in the right direction, and it bugs me that we can’t see the town.”

“You want to turn back?”

“We’ve twisted and turned so much—I don’t know if we’d find our way. Plus, the snow’s coming down so hard our tracks are covered.”

Her teeth chattered, and she rubbed her gloves together. “I’m getting hungry. And I haven’t had much to drink. They say you can really get dehydrated out here.”

That was a problem. Eating snow would cure the dehydration, but it would also make us colder.

“It’s up to you,” she said. “I’m out of ideas.”

“Let’s keep going.”
