CHAPTER 40
BRYCE
Lynette and I moved toward the light, winding around some huge pine trees and trying to stay on a path. The farther we went, the more uneasy I felt. Iâve read stories of people getting caught in an avalanche or taking a wrong turn in the snow and getting lost. At best, the people lost toes and fingers to frostbite. At worst, they died.
I remembered the verse in the Bible that talks about Satan disguising himself as an âangel of light,â and that got me even more scared. As we slowly skied into the wilderness, I prayed for wisdom. Some people âsayâ a prayer, as if all you have to do is mouth the words. I prayed, as in, if we didnât get help from God we were going to be royally cold as ice cubes before this was over.
Please, God, I prayed, you know everything. You know exactly where we are and what it will take to get us out of this mess. I donât want a big rescue party coming up here looking for us, but we need your help. Show us the right path, and if this light is not what we should follow, show us that too. I prayed for both of us because I knew Lynette was not the praying type.
âYou getting cold?â she called.
âI was cold when I got out here,â I said. âIâm okay, though. You?â
âMy face is numb. And I canât feel my fingertips.â
âHold up,â I said.
I looked closely at her face. Her nose was red and so were her cheeks. I couldnât help noticing how dark her eyebrows were, and her eyes were like . . . well, Iâll spare you the details, but believe me, sheâs pretty even when sheâs freezing. I took off the scarf I was wearing.
She protested. âYou donât have to do that.â
âI know. But youâre a lot colder than I am.â
I put the scarf around her neck, making sure it covered her face but that she could still see. âThat better?â
âYeah.â She looked down. âYou think weâre lost?â
âIâm not sure weâre going in the right direction, and it bugs me that we canât see the town.â
âYou want to turn back?â
âWeâve twisted and turned so muchâI donât know if weâd find our way. Plus, the snowâs coming down so hard our tracks are covered.â
Her teeth chattered, and she rubbed her gloves together. âIâm getting hungry. And I havenât had much to drink. They say you can really get dehydrated out here.â
That was a problem. Eating snow would cure the dehydration, but it would also make us colder.
âItâs up to you,â she said. âIâm out of ideas.â
âLetâs keep going.â
